iD 2015 – margi robertson

I was lucky enough to be able to ask Margi Robertson a few questions about her involvement in the hugely successful, long running and internationally recognized iD Dunedin Fashion Week – which she has been an integral part of for the last 15 years.  With iDFW kicking off next week, Michelle Weir and I traveling down to be part of the extravaganza that involves most of the city, and looking forward to being part of it all.

How have you seen iDFW develop over the years?
It’s come such a long way, from an event that was a dream for a few people to a huge professionally presented extravaganza that is loved by locals and visitors alike.

What is it that makes iDFW (as an event) stand out?
The whole city gets behind it and there are a lot of creative industries involved alongside the international presence of emerging designers and international judges

What has been your most memorable iDFW moment?
That would be our fist after party at the Temple Gallery in Moray Place

It must be amazing to watch iDFW become a stepping stone for much of the design talent in New Zealand (and from overseas as well) – who should we be watching out for this year?
I am as interested as you are as many of the designers are new to me too

Do you have a favourite part of iDFW each year?
I do love the Emerging Designers and seeing what talents and new ideas abound from beyond our shores

What is it about Dunedin that makes this event inspire the whole area?
We are a proudly creative city, happy to be small and independent and unique!

It was my first year at iDFW last year and I just loved how the whole of Dunedin embraced the event – it was quite remarkable… you must love knowing you have helped make this event what it is?

It’s a great city to belong to and I am proud to be part of the event

iD 2015 starts Saturday 18 April with a weeklong diary of events for the fashion and arts orientated.  Tickets are still available from some of the larger events, and there is a fantastic array of open to the public (for a gold coin donation if possible).

This year The Fashion Museum Curator Doris De Pont will be doing triple duty as one of the iD National Guest, curating a runway showcase of ANZAC fashion and also speaking on Fashion and Identity while she is there. She is a wealth of knowledge on New Zealand fashion and definitely worth hearing speak. She is national treasure!

The International Guest for 2015  is Doris Raymond – leading aficionado on fashion history and owner of the internationally recognized The Way We Wore in LA.  She is also the star of documentary series L.A. Frockstars. One of the highlights of the week will be the showing of some of her glamorous gowns on the runway at the iconic Fashion Show that bookends the weeks festivities.  She will also join the prestigious judging panel for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards.

  1. It makes me proud to be from Dunedin. The best thing about I.D is. that we are all friends and work together either being in the shows or behind the scene . I enjoy just catching up with friends during the week.

    • It really is one of the things that makes it so remarkable – the whole city gets involved! You should be very proud of your City – it is quite simply amazing! Cant wait to get down there tomorrow…
