nzfw 2012 – company of strangers

The very best thing about coming to fashion week for me, aside from seeing beautiful clothes all week, is discovering a new label to love. There is something about seeing a cohesive, beautifully finished, well thought out collection, that just is the very best part of doing this.  Company of Strangers, while no stranger to the fashion world, showed at NZFW for the first time today and it was just pretty close to perfect. As an obvious lover of a deconstructed, dark aesthetic I knew, from past experience, that I  was going to like what they put on the runway.  But I had no idea how much I was going to love it.  The two halves in my life are black deconstruction in clothing and eye-popping colour for everything else.  Company of Strangers have elegantly and cohesively combined the two for me.  Adding tailored drape, with button detailing and falling away hemlines – to somehow pull in colour blocking and asymmetric patch detail – and make it all cohesive – brilliant.  Have I mentioned the colours?  Mixed in with a base of building-block black, are iridescent purple, orange, and fuchsia in Georgette silk. With soft cashmere like wools in muted orange and also in fuchsia – it is all a skilful mix for me.  I am already making a mental list in my head of things that I just have to have.  The purple long-sleeved shift with the black arm detail – repeated in black with a leather detail – the asymmetric hemline was a beautiful finishing touch. There was much murmuring around me for the biker jackets in muted orange and fuchsia.  I think the particular cleverness about this collection is it all looks incredibly simple and not too ‘messed with’ – and yet there is a lot of detail.  She knows just how much to add without it even beginning to feel vaguely fussy.  Loved the neon yellow bag with the black patterned detail on it. A perfect basic with a Company of Strangers twist – says it all really.
