the week that was #2

We forget that this is a crazy time of year.  Even though it is the middle of winter, summer collections are showing their wares, and in the case of some (Zambesi most notably), the stock for summer has already started arriving.  All of this happens while we are still wearing thermals, stocking and a thick pair of socks in our winter boots.  So we don’t feel very summery, even though this is the busy fashion season.  And just when we have finished seeing summer, NZFW will be upon us!  Oh bliss!  I think by the end of October, I may need to go on a blog holiday for a few weeks… So the week that was is full of summery frippery, new shop sites and even underwear as well!

Kicking off with Karen Walker’s Sea Monsters collection video – with loads of pretty, strong yet feminine dresses and skirts (and pants and blouses).  There is so much to love with all that fabulous pattern, and polka dots.  And the strangely smiling models as well.  We are so used to dower and sour looking models – that this comes as a bit of a shock. With the collection a hat-tip to Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea; Victorian, Mod and Sci-Fi all mixed in one delicious melting pot.  The shoes are outrageously gorgeous and are a continued collaboration between KW and Beau Coops.  Love.  And can’t wait for the accessories either. With the first drop of summer happening on the 4th August, Karen Walker is officially stocking summer. Now we just need a little sunshine.

Hannahs had a very long catwalk show of ALL of their summer shoes on Tuesday night.  They also showed their new summer television campaigned based around a remix of We are Family by Sisters Sledge.  With some of the kids from the ad dancing down the aisles, Michelle managed to get this gorgeous shot of one of the boys’ hot moves (in his Hannahs shoes of course). We will bring you the best in high street shoes in the coming weeks.

Now we get to the bit where everyone is moving stores.  Britomart announced their new Pavilions project which will see new flagship stores grouped around a leafy grove for Karen Walker, Trelise Cooper, and boutiques for Juliet Hogan, Taylor, Ashley Ardrey, Kathryn Wilson and Trelise Cooper Boardroom.  American cosmetics company Bobbi Brown will be joining them also with her first Australasian store. Like we needed any more evidence that Britomart will be the complete fashion destination…

For those like me who cannot abide tacky exercise wear, help is at hand with WE’AR yoga clothing.  A New Zealand company selling around the world, they have moved into the Richmond St Store vacated by Flotsam and Jetsam. I have to say I have pretty much never worn exercise clothing in public, but if I absolutely had to, WE’AR would be it.  Check them out at 168 Richmond Rd Ponsonby, or

Sherie Muijs makes the most perfect shirts.  And I really do mean the most perfect shirts.  She has an almost obsessive eye for detail, and this translates into the most beautiful, pared back designs.  She really has elevated the shirt to almost an art form, and now is Sherie Muijs Shirtmaker.  She is also now available on-line at her own store which launched this week.  I just love the No1 Shirt in white ($275), it is simple, classic and pretty much perfect.

And now a store that is nearly staying put.  The collaborative  pop-up store of Tessuti and Ingrid Starnes which is currently in Kent Street, will now be moving just one street over to Teed St opposite Bambina Cafe.  This will become their permanent home when they open on 30 August with Ingrid Starnes ss12/13 ‘Dacha’.  They will continue their unique blend of fashion, luxury homewares (Missoni) and giftware, with the Kent St store closing 16 August.

Underwear is also going on-line. The new Stella McCartney range will not only be available in store, but also on-line on Bendon’s new e-commerce site The Stella McCartney range can be found on-line here and you will find many other well known brands there as well. The site will go live 13 August.

Next week we will be talking with Emma from Skandi-Skandi in Wellington, reviewing the Cuda Sisters ss12/13 launch, a film review of the Diana Vreeland documentary The Eye Has To Travel and looking at cheap and chic shoes!

  1. What are the latest collections of Sherie Muijs shirts ? Many of them are eagerly awaiting for the upcoming reviewing the Cuda Sisters ss12/13 launch, a film review of the Diana Vreeland documentary.

    • I will be doing a interview with Sherie Muijs after the business of NZFW is all over in a couple of weeks, so watch out for that. Both the Cuda Sisters and Diana Vreeland reviews are already on-line. I will have the date for the Cuda Sisters collection going into their on-line store shortly!
