My issue with the phrase “statement bag” has always been that often the bag is doing ALL the talking and is often almost more important that the rest of the outfit. I noticed this a bit in the US when we travelled there earlier this year where it looked like the only effort people made in California was often just carrying “the” bag – but maybe that is just California as a whole – they tend to be very relaxed about their dress code!
A good bag should be both practical (but that just extends to the fact that it needs to hold things) and beautiful as well. Bags, for me, are a great way to add texture and interest to an outfit. I guess because colour is not high on my list of prescriptives, then the form need to be strong. I am waiting for James Dobson (of Jimmy D* fame) to release a rather amazing prototype across-the-body-bag in black leather – but I hear that will have to wait until next Winter. I have joked with him about mugging him and only stealing the bag from him, but I am actually not really joking it is so fabulous…
So to bags that are actually available in New Zealand at present, and are fabulous – here are my picks for the coming summer…
My continued love affair with clutches shows no signs of abating, so here are two of my favorites… the first being Blue Blank’s Panopticon Clutch available from Children of Vision in its new home of The Shelter in Ponsonby and also Company Store in Dunedin. It retails for $360
The second clutch is the surprising burst of navy (I know!) pony fur clutch from Zambesi. Called Purse 6 in Royal Pony it retails for $245. This will be my “out and about” clutch for the summer… shot by James Black
In terms of the perfect practical shopper Saben have this completely covered with their Obi in black. It also comes in an amazing jungle green for the more colour adventurous. It retails for $420 and you can find a list of stockists here.
Deadly Ponies have moved themselves to the new shopping district of Mackelvie St, Ponsonby and have opened an amazing Katie Lockheart-designed space full of their bags and accessories. Look out for the new neoprene shoppers – Mr Neo Porter ($290) with water bottles encased in colour matched neoprene ($95) to keep your drinks cool. It will be the must-have accessory for every fitness class and beyond… but my personal favourite is the Mr Chain Mail Backpack in black (of course) which retails for $590
Harry and Co have a great bag called Iris that retails for $499. I have of course chosen the black version and I love that each bag is different with the ripped leather detailing at the bottom. Haary and Co have a list of stockists here and they can be bought online here.
At the beautifully curated AnAstuteAssembly they will shortly have the amazing Larissa Hadjio Yuli Mini Clutch in white or black pony – small but perfectly formed. They will retail for $190 and should be online very soon. Go wander around their amazing website at all their other design loveliness while you wait…
