aok – jimmy d

We had a few words with the charming James Dobson of Jimmy D about his new summer collection which he showed at AOK during New Zealand Fashion Weekend recently…
Your collection for SS2013/14 is called…
Gloom Generation: Reloaded
What particularly inspired you this season?
I was still really obsessed with a lot of the theme’s in last Winters collection which ended up being a bit of an ode to NYC – everything from sickly sweet dripping donuts to things a little darker and more sordid. For Summer we gave it a sporty ‘goth-letic’ spin with crop tops and boyishly low slung pants and shorts – all contrasted with draped and trailing silk tops and dresses. We worked with Auckland artist Erin Forsyth again who turned last seasons ‘Donut boobs’ into a ‘Donut Smiley’ with a goofy and buck-toothed face.
What is your favourite thing about this collection?
I love my customers and models to look and feel empowered in my clothes and with this in mind, one of my favourite outfits from the A.O.K show was a pair of boyish domed shorts, a crop top with a leather neck with a trailing silk ‘Black Light’ top over it – it’s perfectly mixed up for me, a little sporty, a little masculine and a little feminine, but all together it has that kick-ass femininity I adore.
The best thing about showing at New Zealand Fashion Weekend was…
You can’t beat the moment when your models are all lined up in their looks complete with hair and make-up and the music starts pumping – it’s when you finally get to show people exactly what’s being going on in your head for months. It was also awesome working on A.O.K with three other designers I really respect and the K Road Business Association that made the show happen, it was also great to continue our relationship with the incredible artists at M.A.C Cosmetics and work with the team at Vada hair – that was some pretty killer hair and make-up!
What pieces will you be wearing yourself?
The draped fronted Collider Tee with some Shad Domed Shorts… and the Undead Shirt… and the prints…. not all at the same time obviously….!
Jimmy D is stocked at Children of Vision in St Kevins Arcade, The Service Depot in Wellington, The White Room Hamilton, Plume Christchurch, 47 Frocks Wanaka, Goddess Queenstown.
