nzfw 2012 – miromoda

With Miromoda – The Showcase, the last show on site for NZFW 2012, it certainly made for a quiet and calm day on friday. With the showcase debuting in 2009, it was started to advance the status of Maori fashion – to raise its artistic and professional standards. With eleven labels showing, we have highlighted the three labels we loved. Some of the labels were more at the ‘wearable arts’ end of the spectrum, the three we loved, Surface Too Deep, Dmonic Intent and Pia Naera, had a more commercial, cohesive feel to them and we can see all three making great strides into the fashion market here and in the case of Surface Too Deep, overseas.

Dmonic Intent, (sisters Maxine, Kris & Samara) had already showed earlier in the week at the New Gen Show, but managed to get another collection together for Miromoda. How they managed to go this in one FW – we are impressed. We loved the mini pleat detailed top and floor length dress. Also the folded weaving detail, and the feathered coat. The label is proud of its aggressive attitude – in its earlier collection this week, one of the t-shirts had the slogan ‘F**k the masses’ on it. Pia Naera of Pia Boutique showed her strong graphic design heart with her collection ‘Metrix’. Personally it was some of the best fabrics of the week – all kaleidoscope patterned in beautiful bright prints. All of it was immediately wearable – bright clean colors in purples and pinks with blues thrown in for good measure. It was a vibrant breath of fresh air. Last in our post, but first on our list is the very talented pair, Esther Miro and Sarah-Jane Abraham from Surface Too Deep. They already have stockists in New Zealand, Australia and the UK for their vintage inspired swimwear. With wonderful contemporary prints in pinks and blues, gorgeous florals – with clever detailed trim. With only two years of designing as a label, these two have got an exciting future ahead of them.
