nzfw 2012 – hailwood

It is easy to forget exactly how long Adrian Hailwood has been quietly designing beautiful clothes for women here is New Zealand.  There isn’t a huge amount of fanfare around what he does – he just gets on with it. Petra Bagust and I were talking at NZFW about buying t-shirts from his small shop in Ponsonby (now home to Cybele) oh so many years ago. It didn’t even have a name on the shop for a long time – Petra joked that they used to call it the Opening Hours Shop as that was all that was written on the door… really proves my point about just getting on and doing what he does. And the highlight of this years collection was most definitely the prints. With the horse head design on sweatshirts, knitwear and even floor length evening dresses – we loved all of it. Then between that and the evening wear to come, was a perfect grey sweater dress belted with 70’s style chain belt. The 70’s vibe came through in the make up from M.A.C. as well. The sleek and sexy dresses that followed in caramels, greys, shot purples and blues – especially the beaded dresses, were all rather grown up and beautiful cut. With nipped in waists, and floor length sheaths (with beautiful beading – did I mention the beading?) worn with the Hailwood for Mi Piachi court shoes gave it a wonderful cohesive feel. The hair was by Lauren Gunn for Stephen Marr – which is part of a long collaboration for the two. All part of Hailwood just doing what he does so well.
