The misconception about me is that I don’t like colour in clothing. Big, big mistake actually. I adore clever use of fabrics and colour. Surface Too Deep has this is spades.  Started by Esther Miro while living in Melbourne in 2010, it is a perfect collision of both her eye for vintage inspired swimwear, and textile design background. Sarah-Jane Abraham has joined her this year and the two good friends are moving the brand forward at great speed!  Already stocked on asos.com, and in Australia – it is a case of conquering the world first, and then New Zealand.  Now stocked in Ruby Boutiques here as well as on their own website surfacetoodeep.com, we are about to see more of this brand.  Chosen to show at NZFW this year as part of the Miromoda Awards, the girls won the Established Designer Category

With a concise collection of four prints as well as basic black, and four styles to choose from, this is an easy collection to love.  There are three vintage inspired bikini styles (The Misfits, Vintage, Almost Famous) and a one piece (aptly named the Screen Siren) all with great attention to detail.  The one piece has detachable straps so you get both two looks, and the ability to sunbathe without getting strap marks. It is a small detail, but a clever one.  I love the Vintage bikini with its interesting front detail and edging finish.  There is an extra pair of briefs in the Hipster, which can be ordered as an alternative to the other higher-waisted briefs (which I personally really love).  They come in sizes 6-14, with the classic black Grace coming in a 16.  In future collections, larger sized busts will hopefully be accommodated.

Much as the styling is gorgeous, it is the prints (done onto Italian Lycra) that really make these pieces something special.  All designed by Esther, with a combination of both photography and painting used in the process. The Flora print is just a standout with its combination of yellows, purples and reds making it eye-catching without being gaudy.  All the prints are quintessentially very feminine and pretty. With pinks and blues (Ava Print) purple and green (Quilt Print) and multi-coloured (Maeve Print) as well as the black (Grace), everyone with an eye for colour is catered for. Get ready to see a lot more of these swimsuits, both on the beaches and on the catwalks.
